Sinew is an immersive, interactive art installation that constructs a techno-ecological environment in which participants encounter both immediate and emergent reactions as a result of their presence within the space. Sinew is designed to be a multimodal system which distinguishes between direct interaction - by producing instantaneous audiovisual feedback - and indirect or passive interaction, which culminate as nebulous, cascading environmental changes. This interplay between explicit control and subtle influence invites participants to reconsider how their mere presence shapes responsive systems.
To support these contrasting reactions, Sinew integrates a variety of physical and nonphysical interface devices, enabling interaction through touch and movement. These inputs are translated into the evolving immersive environment through projections, audio, visualizations, and mechanical elements that outline the interconnectedness between participant and system.
Underlying this experience is a modular show-control framework built using node-based programming software (including TouchDesigner and Max/msp) and accessible communication protocols. Developed around the time and resource constraints that arise when operating within high-demand immersive venues such as EIS, this infrastructure prioritizes flexibility, scalability, and accessibility to creatives. By leveraging commonly used communication standards such as Open Sound Control (OSC) and Network Device Interface (NDI), Sinew establishes a foundation that can be adopted and reconfigured by other artists, designers and creative technologists as they work across a diverse array of creative tools.
